      <image:title>projects - About Me</image:title>
<image:caption>Game Designer Located in Stockholm, Sweden. theo.d.tolstoy@gmail.com Right now I am working at EA - TrackTwenty, (the studio that is making Sim City Build It!) as a Game Designer in a small but very diverse team in terms of nationalities! I have worked here for 4 years on a Plants vs Zombie Match 3 Game. As the only game designer in the team I work on all designs, UX, Technical, System and Level Design. I am the owner of design specifications GDD, decks etc. And every now and then because the team is so small I dip my toes into other discipline to fill gaps. Like making animations, though very rough animations! Before EA I have made hyper-casual mobile games for Flarie a Swedish mobile game platform. I also worked with Lexter, a sound design company, to create a spatial VR experience. I released a game on the hyper casual platform Flarie called Bounce! I moved up north for a while where I started a journey in carpentry. I studied how to restore old houses and furniture design for a year. I learned how to build a log cabin, about different trees and their characteristics, how to build furniture without nails and screws. I take this with me when making games, not only when it comes to old houses it is about doing the research right when creating the space the player invests their time in. For many years I worked as a clerk at a service point, where I had to juggle many tasks at the same time. I learned to read people in a few seconds, how they feel and what they want. I learned about teamwork and what service really means. The experience I got have been invaluable in the game projects and when just working with people in general.</image:caption>

<image:caption>PvZ Match as it sounds is a match 3 game where the players has to match certain tile combinations in order to create plants to solve bite sized puzzles. I worked on and designed: Moment to moment design like how fast a tile should fall and how it feels when it lands. What plants the power ups should be. The timings on the power ups, how fast they should be, and how they should react and feel when used. All the level objects in the game; the items the player has to collect or destroy in the levels. All the puzzles in the game.</image:caption>

      <image:title>pro - Plants vs Zombies Match - Zombie Mode</image:title>
<image:caption>We decided that to have a game mode that should be similar to the tower defence gameplay in PvZ. We designed it to follow the same layout and flow, meaning that zombies spawns from the right and walks to the left. Then when a zombie reaches the end they lose a life. The player has three lives, when all are lost the player fails the level.</image:caption>

      <image:title>pro - Plants vs Zombies Match - Meta Game</image:title>
<image:caption>When the player completes levels they gain suns. The sun can be spent in the meta game to progress in the story. In the meta game the player is rewarded with some light narrative and delightful animations where plants defeat zombies. I made many of these animations myself, simple yet expressive. The metagame is a task list and each task costs an amount of suns. When the player completes a level/puzzle they gain one sun. When all tasks for the current area are completed the player is rewarded with some coins and boosters.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Portal is the main source of inspiration for both the setting and the gameplay. When it comes to progression, navigation and general design Portal has it all. We decided to steal what we liked. Like Picasso once said “Good artists copy, great artists steal”. Instead of the portals, we have the match-three-mechanic.</image:caption>

      <image:title>pro - Colore - When problems create mechanics</image:title>
<image:caption>Some of the mechanics sprung from a solution to a problem. The resetter is a good example; it solved the problem of when the player failed a puzzle. We realized it could create interesting interactions as well. Standing on the puzzle while resetting will elevate you on top of the puzzle. One resetter can be connected to multiple puzzles to add complexity, and many more gameplay beats were born from the resetter.</image:caption>

      <image:title>pro - Colore - Respawn system</image:title>
<image:caption>One problem we had is that if the player got squeezed by falling boxes the player got stuck in the constellation. A solution to this was a respawn system for every box constellation. If the player’s head touches a falling box, it triggers the respawn event.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I held many playtest sessions. This helped with ironing out design flaws and killing darlings. Final puzzle “The three pillars“ I replaced the puzzle in the top image with the puzzle in the bottom image. Playtests showed a few issues with the first puzzle. It felt cramped and awkward to interact with. As the final puzzle in the level it felt underwhelming and too easy. I realized it had some design issues that were harder to fix compared to making a new puzzle.</image:caption>

      <image:title>pro - Colore - Iteration</image:title>
<image:caption>The bottom image shows the final version. As you can see the final version is very different from the origin. There are two reasons for this. Playtesting and iteration from feedback. I started to think about the setting. The setting is what really changed everything. The room became bigger, bridges were added and I created a color palette for the level. The end product started to materialize. What still remains is the spiral-like flow in the level and the verticality.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The match-three-mechanic is the core of the game. When designing new features it has to complement or enhance the match-three mechanic. After a mechanic was implemented, we had a jam session where we tried to come up with fun and interesting interactions and puzzles. If the feature did not add anything, that feature got cut out.</image:caption>

      <image:title>pro - Colore - Setting</image:title>
<image:caption>When designing this level everything fell into place when I decided on the setting; a zen garden. It fit perfectly with my second goal; no stress. In future projects, I will always think about the setting.</image:caption>

      <image:title>pro - Colore - Level composition</image:title>
<image:caption>The level has three floors, three puzzles and objects paired in constellations of three, following the rule of three. Every floor has one puzzle. Even though the puzzles are in the same room they are separated by the floors. This is good because of two things: The player will have a sense of progression when completing a puzzle. The puzzles are self contained, which makes it easier for the player to focus on the puzzle at hand. Early on, the level evolved toward a spiral flow that I really liked. With three floors the spiral became even more apparent.</image:caption>
